If you are studying Minna no Nihongo Lesson 10, you may wonder why Japanese uses these two different sentences:
- 千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。
- ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
Both sentences mean almost the same thing:
Disneyland is in Chiba Prefecture.
However, Japanese speakers use these sentences in different situations because the focus of the information is different.
Let’s look at the difference.
1. 千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります
Meaning
“There is a Disneyland in Chiba Prefecture.”
This sentence focuses on Disneyland.
The speaker wants to tell you what exists in Chiba Prefecture.
Example Conversation
A: 千葉県(ちばけん)には何(なに)がありますか。
(What is there in Chiba Prefecture?)
B: 千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。
(There is Disneyland in Chiba Prefecture.)
This answer sounds natural because the question asks:
“What is there?”
The new information is:
ディズニーランド
2. ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります
Meaning
“Disneyland is in Chiba Prefecture.”
This sentence focuses on Chiba Prefecture.
The speaker wants to explain where Disneyland is located.
Example Conversation
A: ディズニーランドはどこにありますか。
(Where is Disneyland?)
B: ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
(Disneyland is in Chiba Prefecture.)
This answer sounds natural because the question asks:
“Where is it?”
The new information is:
千葉県(ちばけん)
The Difference in One Simple Table
| Sentence | Focus | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。 | Disneyland | What is there in Chiba? |
| ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。 | Chiba Prefecture | Where is Disneyland? |
Understanding 「が」 and 「は」
「が」
「が」 often introduces new information.
Example:
千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。
The speaker is introducing Disneyland as new information.
「は」
「は」 marks the topic.
Example:
ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
The listener already knows about Disneyland.
The speaker is only explaining its location.
More Examples
Example 1
東京(とうきょう)に東京(とうきょう)タワーがあります。
There is Tokyo Tower in Tokyo.
Question:
東京(とうきょう)には何(なに)がありますか。
(What is there in Tokyo?)
Example 2
東京(とうきょう)タワーは東京(とうきょう)にあります。
Tokyo Tower is in Tokyo.
Question:
東京(とうきょう)タワーはどこにありますか。
(Where is Tokyo Tower?)
Example 3
公園(こうえん)に池(いけ)があります。
There is a pond in the park.
Question:
公園(こうえん)には何(なに)がありますか。
Example 4
池(いけ)は公園(こうえん)にあります。
The pond is in the park.
Question:
池(いけ)はどこにありますか。
A Common Mistake
Many students say:
ディズニーランドが千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
This is not grammatically wrong.
However, Japanese people usually say:
ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
because Disneyland is already a known topic.
Using 「が」 can sound like you are strongly emphasizing Disneyland.
Easy Rule to Remember
When you want to say what is in a place, use:
Place に Noun が あります
Examples:
- 教室(きょうしつ)にテレビがあります。
- 部屋(へや)にベッドがあります。
- 公園(こうえん)に犬(いぬ)がいます。
When you want to say where something is, use:
Noun は Place に あります
Examples:
- テレビは教室(きょうしつ)にあります。
- ベッドは部屋(へや)にあります。
- 犬(いぬ)は公園(こうえん)にいます。
Summary
Both sentences are correct:
- 千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。
- ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
The difference is what information you want to emphasize.
Use:
千葉県(ちばけん)にディズニーランドがあります。
when answering:
千葉県(ちばけん)には何(なに)がありますか。
What is there in Chiba Prefecture?
Use:
ディズニーランドは千葉県(ちばけん)にあります。
when answering:
ディズニーランドはどこにありますか。
Where is Disneyland?
If you remember the questions that each sentence answers, choosing the correct pattern becomes much easier.
